300 Words on “SPRING”

“Love is a monster.”

Hey now, gang. One semi-regular feature I’ll do on here is 300 words on a film. It won’t always be a straight review. Sometimes it might simply be a different take on a movie, or thoughts about a particular aspect of one. My picks will be a mix of new releases and not-so-new ones. Today’s entry is the former, an under-the-radar newbie that I’m more than happy to spread the word about, SPRING.

SPRING (2015)

“I gotta make sure you’re the kinda crazy I can deal with.”

One of my favorite films from Fantastic Fest 2014 was this unique little gem from Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, the co-directing team behind the mind-bending RESOLUTION and V/H/S: Viral (the ‘Bonestorm’ segment). Many reviews have sold it as “Richard Linklater’s BEFORE Trilogy meets H.P. Lovecraft.” Variety actually said, “If Linklater attempted to remake Val Lewton’s CAT PEOPLE, the end result might resemble SPRING.” I’d say both of those are rather apt descriptions.

You could lycan some of its story elements to the Swedish masterpiece LET THE RIGHT ONE IN and the overly maligned UNDER THE SKIN as well, to give you a better idea of what kind of almost-unclassifiable movie this is. It definitely won’t be for all of you, but I highly recommend it to likeminded folks, especially if you’re a fan of any of the aforementioned flicks. It’s a clever, funny, good-looking slow burn of a film, and one that I believe the less you know about going into, the better.

Drafthouse Films, the distribution arm of the world’s greatest theater chain, the Alamo Drafthouse, has made a decent-sized imprint in recent years, acquiring provocative, genre-blurring features, including CHEAP THRILLS, I DECLARE WAR, and THE ACT OF KILLING (all of which are worth seeking out). Founder Tim League and company saw something special in SPRING, too, as they snatched up the distribution rights for it on the very night it first screened at Fantastic Fest (the festival is also put on by the Austin-based cinema chain). The film is out now on a variety of platforms and Video On Demand. Give it a try.

P.S. – SPRING’s big reveal is not the same as anything that was hinted at in this post. Like I said, just go into it cold. You can thank me for the recommendation later.

Thank you for taking the time, guys and gals, and thanks for having me. Glad to be part of the State Lines team! Until next time.
