Disney releases the official Moana movie poster and announces Frozen and The Little Mermaid Easter eggs.
Disney’s next animated movie Moana stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho, and will be released on November 23 in the U.S. Yesterday, Disney and His Rockness released the first look at the film’s theatrical poster, which you can see below.
Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows why.
From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) meets the once-mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”) and produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”), “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.
Of additional interest in that synopsis is the mention of Moana’s directors, Ron Clements and John Musker, who have made a number of Disney classics such as Treasure Planet (yes it’s a classic because it’s fantastic), Aladdin, Hercules, The Princess and the Frog, and The Little Mermaid. Now, for those of you familiar with Disney (and Pixar) animated movies, you know they love hiding Easter eggs in all of their movies for their eagle-eyed viewers to find. Heck, the Pizza Planet truck from Toy Story has been in every Pixar movie since 1995, save for The Incredibles.
Well, Moana directors Clements and Musker have confirmed that we will be seeing some more Easter eggs in this film and they even told us which characters will be making an appearance! At a Moana press conference in July, Musker told Buzzfeed, “Flounder does appear in this movie. You’ll have to find Flounder. I won’t say where.” That’s right, Flounder, Ariel’s favorite – uh, flounder? – from The Little Mermaid will make an appearance in Moana. That makes total sense since the ocean itself plays a large role in this movie, so of course an old buddy fish could show up. The next Easter egg doesn’t quite make as much sense though. Clements also stated, “Olaf is in the movie very briefly.” Yup, the snowman from Frozen will apparently be a melted puddle on the beach or something. Actually, this does make sense since Olaf kind of has a snowman death wish and likes being warm. It will be interesting to see how they incorporate him into this movie (I’m calling that he will be a toy of some kind).
So there you have it, Disney fans. A new poster and some Easter egg scoops for Moana. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled when you see the new movie in November!
