grammy_articleThose of us here at State-Lines really enjoy music so much so we have dedicated an article and podcast to the night that celebrates the best of the wonderful art form. The 55th Annual Grammys will be held February 7, 2013 and some of us have taken it upon ourselves to hand out those shiny gold statues to the artists. While a lot of us would nominate some different artists in these categories we work the balance of critical praise and commercial success the Grammys provide.

Erik Scott – !

Jarrett Haas – @

David Hennenhoefer – #

Adam Kappel – $

Jonas Arca- %

Album of the Year

  • El Camino – The Black Keys
  • Some Nights – Fun. $
  • Babel – Mumford & Sons ! %
  • channel, Orange – Frank Ocean @ #
  • Blunderbuss – Jack White

Babel – Mumford & Sons

Erik: Their singles were played everywhere, and their sound is distinct.

Jonas: I’m completely out of the loop on most all of the nominees, so all I can do is pick winners like women pick NCAA brackets. Hopefully I’m half successful. Babel-Mumford & Sons, because that is a great name!

channel, Orange – Frank Ocean

Jarrett: He had a unique voice and perspective and delivered it expertly.

David: Frank Ocean a.k.a the perfect blend of Stevie Wonder and Prince wins because his album is the rare combination of widely popular success and universal critical acclaim.

Some Nights – Fun

Adam: They had two great hits off this album this year and although not many people have sat and listened to the whole album through, it really is a great album.

Record of the Year

  • “Lonely Boy” – The Black Keys
  • “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” – Kelly Clarkson
  • “We Are Young” – Fun. featuring Janelle Monae %
  • “Somebody That I Used To Know” – Gotye featuring. Kimbra ! @ $ #
  • “Thinkin Bout You” – Frank Ocean
  • “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” – Taylor Swift

“We Are Young” – Fun. ft. Janelle Monae

Jonas: Because I wish was invited to her party in the Sonos Commercial

“Somebody That I Used To Know” – Gotye ft. Kimbra

Erik: This was another crossover hit. It was remixed to fit a few different genres of music, which helped it gain some serious steam.

Jarrett: Very unique sound, and was everywhere

Adam: Something different on the radio for once. Plus when I play it at trivia I get at least 10 people that say they love it.

David: “Somebody That I Used to Know” was everywhere you turned from Glee to SNL. The song also has some substance and isn’t cookie cutter like “We Are Young”

Song of the Year

  • The A Team“- Ed Sheeran
  • Adorn” – Miguel Pimentel
  • Call Me Maybe“- Carly Rae Jepsen  ! @ # $
  • Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” – Kelly Clarkson
  • We Are Young” – Fun featuring Janelle Monáe  %

“Call Me Maybe”- Carly Rae Jepsen

Erik: I am sure this is many peoples “guilty pleasure” Song of the Year; myself included in that group.

Jarrett: Gotta be call me. Super catchy.

David: As much as I hate it “Call Me Maybe” had buzz around it and found constant rotation in every form of media.

Adam: It’s so damn catchy.

“We Are Young”  – Fun featuring Janelle Monáe

Jonas: This one I know, and this is undeniably a great song. Anyone who says not is just a contrarian and that’s a FACT!

Best New Artist

  • Alabama Shakes
  • Fun $
  • Hunter Hayes
  • The Lumineers
  • Frank Ocean @ # %

Frank Ocean

Erik: Easy. Frank.

David: I would really like to see Alabama Shakes win something but I feel it’s Frank Ocean’s night. This will be his national exclamation point for this past year.

Jonas: The obligatory he came out of the closet award

Adam: As I said earlier. I feel like they had a couple great hits and I think those will shine through. Plus I’d love to see them win.

Best Pop Vocal Album

  • Stronger – Kelly Clarkson !
  • Ceremonials – Florence and the Machine
  • Some Nights – Fun # $
  • Overexposed – Maroon 5 %
  • The Truth About Love – Pink

Stronger – Kelly Clarkson

Erik: I am going purely off of Kelly Clarkson’s vocal prowess. Even though Adam Levine is dreamy, I don’t believe that his singing can match hers.

Some Nights – Fun

David: Simply put, Fun. will win. This will be their consolation Grammy for losing the bigger categories.

Adam: Agree totally with David. The vocals on this album are killer. I’ve loved his vocals ever since The Format.

Overexposed – Maroon 5

Jonas: No idea…..

Jarrett: Please god not Maroon 5

Best Dance/Electronica Album

  • Wonderland – Steve Aoki
  • Don’t Think – The Chemical Brothers %
  • > Album Title Goes Here < – Deadmau5
  • Fire & Ice – Kaskade
  • Bangarang – Skrillex ! # $

Don’t Think – The Chemical Brothers

Jonas- That’s the name of an award winner

Bangarang – Skrillex

Erik: Crossover artist if there ever was one. He has worked with multiple dub-step DJs, and top rated rock acts and even hip-hop artists, both mainstream and just above underground

David: This is a category in its mainstream infancy therefore I see Skrillex taking home the prize mainly because his album is most successful commercially.

Adam: I honestly have no idea. I just see Skrillex everywhere.

Best Rock Album

  • El Camino – The Black Keys @ # $ %
  • Mylo Xyloto – Coldplay
  • The 2nd Law – Muse !
  • Wrecking Ball – Bruce Springsteen
  • Blunderbuss – Jack White

El Camino – The Black Keys

Jarett: Black Keys. Mostly because the other albums aren’t great.

David:I could see this going to Jack White’s way or Bruce Springsteen’s as a consolation for him being snubbed in the big categories. But The Black Keys had one hell of a strong album with successful singles to back it up. Their songs are used for everything

Jonas: Because they are the only group I don’t recognize at all.

Adam: Mainly, I just love this album. Plus the songs are everywhere.

The 2nd Law – Muse

Erik: I don’t really have that much to go on in this category this year. I haven’t really heard that much of any of the bands nominated except for Muse

Best Alternative Album

  • The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do – Fiona Apple ! %
  • Biophilia – Björk
  • Making Mirrors – Gotye
  • Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming – M83 @ # $
  • Bad as Me – Tom Waits

The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do – Fiona Apple

Erik: I don’t have much to go on in this category at all, although I did like me some Fiona Apple back in the day

Jonas: I don’t even know what that name means!

Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming – M83

Jarrett: Great album and came out of nowhere

Adam: What Jarrett said.

David: Fiona Apple is the heavy favorite but I’m calling an upset. M83 made a better album and the song “Midnight City”  is the second coming of MGMT’s “Kids”.

Best R&B Album

  • Black Radio – Robert Glasper Experiment %$
  • Back to Love – Anthony Hamilton
  • Write Me Back – R. Kelly #
  • Beautiful Surprise – Tamia
  • Open Invitation – Tyrese !

Black Radio – Robert Glasper Experiment

Jonas This looks like a list of nominees from 7 or 8 years ago. Went with the one I don’t know.

Adam: I honestly have no idea, I more or less just guessed.

Write Me Back – R. Kelly

David: I’m picking R. Kelly because “Trapped In The Closet” is so amazing in so many ways. Aziz Ansari’s R. Kelly concert bit is also pure genius, and I have no idea in this category

Open Invitation – Tyrese

Erik: From what I understand, Tyrese made one heck of a quote a quote un quote, comeback album.

Best Rap Album

  • Take Care – Drake #
  • Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album. Pt. 1 – Lupe Fiasco
  • Life Is Good – Nas %
  • Undun – The Roots @$
  • God Forgives, I Don’t – Rick Ross
  • Based on a T.R.U. Story – 2 Chainz  !

Take Care – Drake

David: Drake is the easy choice. His feature on “No Lie” snowballed the 2 Chainz success, Rick Ross’s album was a flop, and the others don’t have hype or stack up musically. “Take Care” is very complete, genre blurring, and artist defining. It’s also an Album of the Year snub.

Life Is Good – Nas

Jonas: Musically this is a fantastic album. Quietly one Nas’ best.

Undun – The Roots

Jarrett: Ugh. None? The Roots. Don’t love any of these

Adam: I enjoy the roots. That’s about it.

Based on a T.R.U. Story – 2 Chainz

Erik: Most featured artist of the year, edging out even the over used Drake. This had to have helped build Grammy worthy results for a much anticipated album.
