I love movies. I love watching movies at home, curled up on the couch in my footie pajamas. But I think the real way to watch a movie is to go to the theater. Smell, and possibly even buy, the popcorn. Grab a huge drink. Hear the flick of the projector start up. Watch a new blockbuster with some of your best buds. Watching a movie, at the theater, in that environment, can create a moment that you’ll never forget. Of course, I may be biased, cause I frequent the best dang movie theater in town (shout out to future state-lines contributor Todd Sommerfield, who works at said theater) Muvico in Ybor City. Not only can you do all those things I just mentioned, but you can also grab a cocktail or two and sit back in the industry’s most comfortable chairs and soak in some flick. Now, with that out of the way, let’s talk about some upcoming trailers. With the Oscars airing at the end of the month, this is a bit of a dead time for “quality” movies. But that’s ok! We can still find some diamonds in the rough. So, I’m going to pick out some movies you, and I, should watch in the next month based solely on the trailers. I will grade each trailer from 1 to 10, with a 5 being a yes, you should see it, but barely, and a 10 being a must see.

Dark Skies [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8iLp1xQtPQ]
Keri Russell is so hot right now. I’ve always thought she was pretty cool, but she’s currently crushing it on the awesome new show “The Americans“, and now has this movie coming out. It has all the beats of a classic horror movie trailer. The weird kid, his weird connection with something (THE SANDMAN!) and his weird, late night room visit. Then you have birds kamikaze-ing themselves in to Keri Russell’s house. So far, I’m at a 3. I dig Keri, but not horror movies. Then, ya boy JK Simmons steps into the movie and immediately bumps this movie to a 5. Things get creepy and more horror like, with body mutilation and Keri looking possessed and all signs point to an “exorcism” kind of movie. Which is an immediate drop in points to a 4. Then the dudes face happens at 1:46 and I’m back in! Hilarious looking and also creepy. But what really seals the deal? 2:24. ALIENS! Aliens are an instant 3 point bump. I’m seeing this movie.

Any movie starring The Rock gets an immediate 7. Except, ya know, those weird kids movies he did in order to make a bunch of money. So we’re starting high. Honestly, the trailer doesn’t really grab me. It also has Susan Sarandon (who will always be Annie Savoy) and Carlos from How I Met Your Mother (I don’t watch the walking dead. So he’s Carlos, not SHANE), so that’s good. This movie, to me, looks like it is missing out on the fun factor that would really set it over the top for me. But, we have The Rock deciding which side of the law to stay on… That’s worth a 6 to me.

Jack The Giant Killer [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ6aeaGQKUE]
Good news! Though I didn’t notice him in the trailer, Warwick Davis is in this movie. Apart from him, the cast is interesting. Ewan McGregor (with a sweet, dark ages Adam Levine haircut) delivers a few Obi-Wan-like lines (1:09). It seems like Hollywood really wants Nicholas Hoult to be a thing. I haven’t seen enough of him to comment, but he doesn’t make me NOT want to see this. Then you have Stanley Tucci, who is awesome, a main girl who looks very much like Amanda Seyfried, plus loads of CGI giants, and you could have something interesting. Like Hansel and Gretel, I think this film does not take itself too seriously (There’s a “You Don’t Know Jack” tagline) but but will take the action seriously. Love the rhyme at the beginning. I wonder, is it from any of the original fairy tales? It’s great! The moment at 2:18 is right out of a “Pirates” movie, but I won’t dock points. This one gets a 7.

Stoker [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNpDG4WR_74]
By far the most interesting trailer in the next few months. This movie looks incredible. Its from the director of Oldboy (you saw that, didn’t you? No? Well you should. But be warned, it gets weird). I can’t place a finger on the tone of this movie. It has some Wes Anderson elements, with the deadpan stares of Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska. But it also has some horror elements, like the spider motifs and the hair growing for no reason. You’ve got a weird incest story line. What genre is that? Gotta be horror, right? And then, THEN, Mia stands up with a huge rifle! (1:55) What is this movie!!! I don’t know, but I want to see it now. I’m in line already.

Oz The Great and Powerful [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1NGnVLDPog]
This movie should have been Wicked. But, I won’t hold that against it. Love the old 4×3, black and white beginning. Great touch. Simply put, this movie has an awesome cast led by James Franco (is he for real?), and I LOVE that the trailer doesn’t reveal anything about the movie. Too often, I know the whole plot before even sitting my butt in the seats. Give me an intriguing teaser anytime! I’m in.

RELEASING MARCH 15
Upside Down [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3veONCcRWbw]
The most visually stunning movie coming out in the next month, Upside Down looks like it could be pretty great. Or, it could be tough to watch. A lot will depend on director Juan Solanas’ ability to pull this effect off. I’m not sure how he got this gig, as it looks like a pretty big budget movie, and he hasn’t done, well… Anything. But hey, I’m an optimist. I’m hoping he has enough “touch” to not beat us over the head with the upside down effect. The scene at 1:44 gives me hope for the visuals. This trailer has the best, most epic music of the trailers we’ve reviewed. The movie will probably be about class separation, love, and free will. I’m ok with that. Sometimes you need to play with the big themes. If we can add good vs evil in the somewhere, that might be all of them. Add in the fact that I’m still one of those guys that digs Kirsten Dunst, and I’m giving this flick a high score.

Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Olivia Wilde, and an AWESOME LOOKING Jim Carrey. Yes.
